Description: TIMS is a magnetic sector mass spectrometer designed for high precision isotope ratio measurements. Our TIMS facility, built around the ThermoScientific Triton-Plus mass spsectrometer, specilaizes in analysis of radiogenic isotopes, but is also capable of measuring non-radiogenic isotope ratios from solid and liquid matrices. Compared to the MC-ICP-MS, the TIMS affords higher precision, lower throughput. alternative for strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) isotopic ratio analysis. Prior to analysis, samples are acid-digested and elements of interest are purified using traditional ion chromatography techniques. Currently, Sr, Ca, and Rb may be isolated using the ESI Prepfast automated ion chromatography system, allowing for higher sample throughput compared to traditional gravity-fed column chemistry. For solid samples, in-situ isotopic analysis can be achieved using the ESI Micromill housed in our facilities.
Sample submission: Samples may be submitted to the TIMS laboratory for analysis. Please contact the TIMS laboratory to inquire about our analytical capabilities and method development.
Training: Student researchers and faculty who may be interested in training on instrument operation and data interpretation, please contact the water quality laboratory to schedule training and time on the instrument. While the number of training hours may vary, depending on the student's knowledge and analytical skills, we require a minimum of eight training hours prior to allowing the student to independently operate the instrument.
