Description: The Thermo Scientific ISQ LT single quadrupole GC/MS is a high-throughput benchtop instrument that is used to screen, characterize, and quantify organic compounds in diverse matrices.  It is also equipped with a flame ionization detector (FID) and electron capture detector (ECD), and the autosampler is capable of injecting both microscale liquid and headspace gas samples.

Stable Isotopes Water Analyzer

Description: The Picarro is a high-precision isotope analyzer used to measure stable isotopes in water. The Picarro L2130-i provides a platform for advanced research into all aspects of the water cycle: water vapor, liquid water, or water trapped in solids. This instrument uses a laser based absorption technique involving cavity ring-down spectroscopy. 

Analytical Method: Stable isotopes in water are measured following the Picarro guidelines for liquid water isotope analyzer.


Description: The Hach 2100N Laboratory Turbidimeter is used to measure the turbidity from 0 to 4000 NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units).

Analytical Method: Our laboratory follows Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, 23rd Edition. Turbidity analysis is completed using 2130B nephlometric method. Samples do not require filtration and must be stored at 4ºC.

Sample submission: Water samples may be submitted to the water quality laboratory chemist for analysis.

Binder Oven and Mettler Balance

Description: This Binder ED115 15.4 cu ft. oven is used for drying "total dissolved solids" at 180ºC and "total suspended solids" at 103ºC-105ºC.  Solids refer to matter that is suspended or dissolved in water. Material residue left in a vessel after evaporation of a sample and its subsequent drying in an oven at a defined temperature is referred to as "Total Solids". Total solids includes the "total suspended solids", which is the portion of total solids retained by a filter, whereas the total solids is the portion that passes through the filter.

Automated Wet Chemistry Analyzer

Description: This discrete, bench top analyzer automates the manual wet chemistry methods. Colorimetric methods are automated with the discrete analyzer, allowing for reduced analysis time and errors typically associated with manual methods of analysis. Analyses performed using the SEAL analyzer include ammonia-nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen and nitrite-nitrogen, phosphate-P and total phosphorus, and silica. 

pH Meter

Description: The Beckman 360 meter is used to measure the pH of a solution. The pH (potential of hydrogen) of a substance is an indication of the number of hydrogen ions it forms in a certain volume of water. 

Samples submitted for pH measurement to the water quality laboratory, our analysts will also analyze and report conductivity (completed using the YSI 3200 Conductivity Meter) of the submitted samples. The cost per sample includes pH and conductivity.

Conductivity Meter

Description: The YSI 3200 Conductivity Meter is used to measure the conductivity of a solution. This meter features resistance-ratio technology, data logging, and auto temperature compensation.

Analytical Method: Our laboratory follows Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, 23rd Edition. Conductivity analysis is completed using method 2510B.

Total Organic Carbon Analyzer

Description: The TOC-VCPH is a PC controlled high-sensitivity analyzer that measures the amount of total organic carbon (TOC), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total inorganic carbon (TIC), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC).  This analyzer is also used to measure the total nitrogen (TN) and total dissolved nitrogen (TDN). 

Ion Chromatograph

Description: The Ion Chromatograph is used in the water quality laboratory to measure concentrations of major anions, including bromide, chloride, fluoride, nitrate-N, nitrite-N, phosphorus-P and sulfate. The chromatographic process separates the different ions within the sample and the amount of anion is measured by the change in conductivity as the species passes through the detector. Samples require filtration using a 0.45µm filter and samples must be stored at 4ºC.
